Land Trust Accreditation Commission

Areas of Need

YOU CAN HELP! We rely on the support of landowners, individual donors, businesses, foundations, and units of government to continue protecting and stewarding land across our region. Our success depends on you - every gift makes a difference.

Although by no means a complete list of our fundraising needs, a few of our active projects are highlighted here:

East Grand Traverse Bay
Acme Township boasts 10 miles of beautiful Grand Traverse Bay coastline but offers little public access. With a number of aging and "for sale" structures lining the shore, the area had become ripe for redevelopment. The township, recognizing the opportunity, created the 'Shoreline Preservation Master Plan which now serves as a framework for the multi-phase project and GTRLC has begun working with the area's landowners with the ultimate goal of securing the properties and providing unencumbered views and increased accessibility.

Old Mission Peninsula
The mission of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy is to protect significant scenic, natural, and farm lands and nowhere are our successes on all three fronts more evident than on Old Mission Peninsula. Over 1,300 acres of land have been protected by GTRLC including two nature preserves, Pyatt Lake and Brinkman Bog Natural Area, as well as 3,880 acres of farmland.

Take a video tour of Pyatt Lake Natural Area with Executive Director Glen Chown (video is just over 3 minutes in length).

Lake Michigan Coast
In 2003, GTRLC kicked off its Coastal Campaign with an ambitious goal to protect over 6,000 acres of land along Lake Michigan including dunes, forest, and farmland parcels. This unprecedented protection effort was successful because of the generous contributions of donors and the vision and leadership of public and private funders. In 2007, we constructed a new scenic overlook platform and stairway to the beach at Green Point Dunes Nature Preserve, built nearly 12 miles of multi-use trails at and developed a sustainable forestry management plan for Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Preserve, and restored native ecosystems by pulling invasive plant species and removing trash from decades-old dump sites.
